The major salivary glands, three pairs in total, are found in and around your mouth and throat. The major salivary glands are the parotid, submandibular, and sublingual glands . The parotid glands are located in front and beneath the ear. A duct, called Stensen’s duct, drains saliva from the parotid gland into the mouth, at the area of the upper cheeks. The submandibular glands are found on both sides, just under and deep to the jaw, towards the back of the mouth. This gland produces roughly 70% of the saliva in our mouth. The submandibular duct, called Warhtin’s duct, enter the floor of the mouth under the the front of the tongue. Sublingual glands, meanwhile, reside beneath the tongue, and supply saliva to the floor of the mouth as well. There are many (between 600 to 1,000) tiny glands called minor salivary glands. These glands are 1-2 mm in diameter and coat all the mucousal surfaces or lining of our mouth and throat.

Hypothyroidism is the term given when low levels of thyroid hormones are produced by the thyroid gland. It may result from autoimmune diseases (when the person's immune system starts to attack the body's own organs), poor iodine intake or be brought on by use of certain drugs. Since thyroid hormones are essential for physical and mental development, hypothyroidism during development (that is, before birth and during childhood) can result in learning difficulties and reduced physical growth. Hypothyroidism in adults results in decreased metabolic rate. This causes symptoms that include fatigue, intolerance of cold temperatures, low heart rate, weight gain, reduced appetite, poor memory, depression , stiffness of muscles and infertility.

The anterior pituitary gland produces seven important hormones: human growth hormone (hGH), thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), prolactin (PRL), adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), and melanocyte-stimulating hormone (MSH). Each of these hormones targets specific receptors in the body to stimulate specific glands and tissues in the body. The thyroid gland, ovaries, testes, mammary glands, and the cortex of the adrenal glands are all stimulated by the hormones of the anterior pituitary, resulting in the pituitary gland being known as the “master gland” for its control of the endocrine system. More modern studies now show that, while still important, the anterior pituitary is subservient to the control of the hormones of the hypothalamus. Releasing hormones from the hypothalamus, such as thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) and gonadotropic-releasing hormone (GnRH), stimulate the anterior pituitary to release TSH, FSH, and LH. Inhibiting hormones, such as growth hormone-inhibiting hormone (GHIH), prevent the secretion of hormones hGH and TSH.

The most recent research in Australia has shown that around 14% of older Australians suffer from a clinically relevant thyroid disorder with 4% having an undiagnosed thyroid disorder.  National studies in 2004 have shown that approximately 50% of Australian children and a similar percentage of pregnant women suffer from iodine deficiency.  More recent smaller studies have shown that approximately 10% of pregnant women in Australia suffer from mild hypothyroidism (subclinical) secondary to autoimmune thyroid disease.  Thyroid cancer also appears to be on the increase. 

All very interesting. I just became aware of this Pineal Gland study. I am a certified hypnotherapist and was surfing . I am commenting on Mr. Wolfe’s statement about Dr. Adkins clogged heart untimely death . Dr. Adkins died from a traumatic cranial head injury to the back of his head when he slipped on the ice while walking to work one winter morning as he did every morning. He held onto life for three weeks. A remarkable feat for a man of his late 70’s. His autopsy stated he had a perfectly clear circulatory system which surely helped him to hold on as long as he did. As Dave also stated, don’t listen to rumors of other people. I agree. On the Adkins diet… Read the Book! I have turned many people onto this Diet and it has helped everyone of them. But as I always tell them first…don’t get on the Diet until you first Read the Book! Not part of it.. but the whole thing(my 300 pound Doctor even argued with me about the diet. Did you read the whole book I would say?..no just parts of it he would reply. Read the whole book!).
